Having spent a combined 11 years in the minors before their pro debuts with the Chicago Cubs in 2014 and 2016 respectively, catcher Willson Contreras and infielder Javier Baez have just been selected to take part in the 2018 MLB All-Star game.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon called Contreras the best catcher in baseball and doubled down on his statement after the news of his selection to the All-Star game. However in spite of his manager’s co-sign, Contreras still was in shock by the news.
“[It] took me by surprise,” said Contreras to WGN. “My first reaction was like, ‘I have no words to say,’ but then I started crying when I went down to the cage because I hoped for. I’ve been working every single game and I play every single game like it is my last one.”
This season Baez has an RBI of 65, with 17 home runs and 16 stolen bases, yet in spite of his success, Baez, like his teammate Contreras was also humbled by the selection.
“”Really excited. I think everybody plays to be in the All-Star Game,” Baez told WGN. “I know we have a lot of fans and they dedicate a lot of time to us and what we do outside the field. I feel blessed to be in this spot.”
Baez and Contreras will be joining their 5 time All-Star teammate Jon Lester in 2018 All-Star game. The Cubs currently sit with a record of 51-36 and are gearing up for another title run, but until the playoffs get here, the celebration of the years of some of the team’s standout players should be fun to watch. The 2018 MLB All-Star game will air July 17th at 7 PM on FOX.
