Representative TIKTOK Ban: Should Politicians Keep Out of the App?
The government of Wisconsin recently issued a ban on the use of TikTok on any state-associated devices. We must ask ourselves, is this necessary?
At first glance, it may seem like the most logical choice – to protect our citizens from potential security threats. But look closer and you’ll see there are bigger issues at hand.
TikTok has become an incredibly popular platform for self-expression, displaying art, creativity, and culture. It has provided a platform for minority voices to be heard in ways that were never previously possible. To take away this platform would be denying these voices the opportunity to be seen – silencing them instead of amplifying them.
What is needed is not a ban, but more education. Education about staying safe online, understanding digital privacy and security, and using TikTok responsibly. The knowledge is out there – we just have to ensure everyone has access to it.
Banning the use of TikTok on any state-associated device should not be the answer. It’s time to recognize the value of such platforms, and make sure everyone can feel safe using them.
