Broadway Show: Jesus Christ Superstar

Lyric Opera of Chicago

Music by Andrew Lloyd Weber

Lyrics by Tim Rice

Chicago Editor: Michelle O’Kennard, MHS

Jesus Christ Superstar was by far one of the best Broadway shows I have seen thus far! The performances were nothing short of phenomenal! The vocalists gave wonderful performances as they depicted the last hours of Jesus before he died. The stage design and costumes gave a realistic depiction of the time the story took place all while mesmerizing the crowd! I enjoyed the energy of the performers and the quality of acting was grade-A!!

As a Christian, in my opinion, I would have liked to see the story continued after the crucifiction and see the ressurrection of Jesus Christ played out as well. However, overall, I enjoyed the performance and would definitely suggest that you see it!! For more events at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, visit their website at: www.lyricopera.org

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) signs new Executive OrderToday at the GEDC of Englewood, Chicago, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner (R) signs a new Executive Order to “ensure respresentative contracting in State procurement”.  Governor Rauner and his task force members, including Chicago Mayoral Candidate Mr. Willie Wilson, shared the importance of creating equal procurement opportunities for Black Business Owners. According to Governor Rauner, this Executive Order will, “…change the face of economic growth”.   It is the task force’s job to ensure accountability within the state procurement process.  According to recent task force research data, Cook County has the highest number of Black Business owners in the state and make up of 9% of Illinois business owners, whereas only .06% of all Illinois State procurement contracts awarded to these Black Businesses.

Mother’s Day is that special time of year where we honor our mothers for all the sacrifices they have made for us throughout our lives.  As their children, it is important to make our moms feel special and appreciated. As a fellow mother myself, there is no gift greater than to feel appreciated for your sacrifices and hard work. As an attendee, I truly felt appreciated as a fellow mother, by the gentlemen of the Chi Lambda Lambda Chapter for the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. while attending their 7th Annual Mother’s Day Gospel Brunch and Women of Excellence Awards this past weekend. Each mother was greeted upon check-in with a fresh flower and escorted to her table like a VIP. We enjoyed a delicious brunch with a wide variety of scrumptious options to choose from, while listening to a live band, playing soft jazz in the back ground.  We were able to shop for beautiful accessories and specialty products from a variety of participating vendors. Once we finished our delicious meal, we enjoyed a complimentary picture from the photobooth .  As the program began, we enjoyed inspirational gospel performances by local gospel artists and a raffle for the mothers, including a large flat screen television and Beyonce concert tickets! Awardees for the Women of Excellence Awards included Ms. Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County Board President, President, Dr. Traci Brown, Ph.D, Dr. Gisele M. Casanova, Ph. D and Dr. Marilyn Griffin, M.D., FAPA. Thank you to the Chi Lambda Lambda Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. for hosting a seamless event for the mothers! We look forward to next years’ brunch!

A Special Mother’s Day Tribute, 2018

As a child, I was blessed with good role models who took the time to mentor me and guide me in the right direction.  I had a very close childhood friend named Queenie, who lived 1 block behind me. Her mother, Mrs. Elvira Vaughn, took me into her home as if I was her very own.  She taught me the Bible while she did my hair for school, made sure I had a hot bowl of oatmeal (with raisins) waiting on me at the breakfast table with her own children, and gave me a hug every day before school and reminded me that I was special.  I loved her just as much as I felt she loved me and she was not afraid to show that love and support.  She made room in her heart for me and did not hold back.  In her home, I was able to find comfort and peace from the chaos of the outside world.   For Mother’s Day 2018, I would like to publicly thank Mrs. Vaughn for all that she has done for me.  I believe that God will put people in your life to help you on your journey when things get difficult.   For me, she was that person who saw a need and stepped in to help me along my way.  Thank you and continue to rest peacefully Mrs. Vaughn.  You will forever be in my heart. Happy Mother’s Day!

Respectfully Submitted,
